The federal government has announced plans to dump undisclosed amounts of radioactive material, oil and other toxins into the Timor Sea, just 155km from the Indonesian coast.
The plan would see the massive floating oil and gas platform Northern Endeavour towed through Indonesian waters to an “undisclosed location” in Asia to be scrapped. The plan acknowledges the risk of a major oil leak happening during this operation.

Environmental organisation, Friends of the Earth has welcomed the announcement of a new industry to recycle offshore oil and gas platforms and other assets.
Jeff Waters, Friends of the Earth Australia Campaigner, said he was excited about the prospect of a sustainable solution for decommissioned oil rigs.

An environmental group is concerned offshore oil and gas industries are underestimating their emissions after an international study found methane leaks were under-reported in the UK.
The report cited outdated or incorrect emission factors and incomplete data to be behind the inaccurate numbers.

Australian rig recycling centre proposed
In a submission to the Western Australian government, Friends of the Earth Australia (FoEA) is calling for an Australian Rig Recycling Centre (ARRC) to be built in the Pilbara, where decommissioned oil and gas rigs can be cleaned and scrapped for recycling.
FoEA says the new centre would provide thousands of new, ongoing jobs.
